Treating a Kidney Stone by Laser- Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

A Kidney Stone is basically a hard, crystalline mineral material that is formed within one's kidney (or urinary tract). At an average, one in every 20 people develops a kidney stone at some point in time in their life.

These stones are known as one of the most physically painful conditions.

The cause behind the formation of a kidney stone varies according to the type of the stone that has formed.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of a kidney stone will require a complete health background assessment and also a thorough physical exam in addition to other tests.

Treatment
The treatment of kidney stones is tailored according to the kind of stone that one is suffering from. The urine might be strained to collect stones for evaluation. Drinking a lot of water every day will increase the urine flow. People who are dehydrated or even those who have severe nausea and vomiting might also need intravenous fluids.

The other means of treatment are as follows:
Medication
Narcotic medicines may be enough for short-term pain relief. If an infection is detected, it needs to be further treated by antibiotics. There is a longer list of medicines that is specific for the kind of stone one suffers from.

Lithotripsy
ExtracorporealShock Wave lithotripsy is done by using sound waves in order to just break up the large stones so that the smaller fragments can pass down the urethras into your bladder more easily. This process tends to be more uncomfortable and might even require the patient to be injected with mild anaesthesia. It could cause bruises on the abdomen and the back, in addition to bleeding around the kidney and nearby organs.

Tunnel Surgery
The stone can also be removed by creating a small incision in your back and might be needed only when: a.) The stone starts to cause an obstruction or an infection that damages the kidneys. b.) The stone has become way too large to pass through.

Ureteroscopy
The doctor might use and instrument which is called an ureteroscope in order to remove a stone that gets stuck in the urethra or your bladder. A small cage, guided by a tiny camera is used to snag the stone as the doctor removes it.

Prevention
The fact that prevention is much better than cure isn’t lost on anybody. The key to preventing getting a Kidney Stone starts with proper hydration. Drink up to about 12 glasses of water daily. This water intake is going to help flush your kidneys.

Eat food that is rich in oxalate and reduce your intake of salt in order to reduce the risk of getting a kidney stone.

Things to Keep In Mind before Going for Kidney Stone Treatment in Delhi

Even with today’s technology and advancements in the field of medicine and science, getting kidney stone treatment in Delhi can be a hard and complicated task. With so many different hospital and urology centers, there are many things to keep in mind when choosing a kidney stone treatment center in Delhi.

·        Treatments technology
The first thing to look for is the kidney stone treatments technology that is available in the center. It is possible to treat kidney stone using 2 different methods or in combinations. The first process is known as ESWL or extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, in which sound waves are passed to the stone in kidney of the patient and the waves focusing on the stone, pulverizes it by shearing effect... The minute crystals which are broken down are then passed through the urine of the patient. This is a painless and noninvasive procedure but is only suitable for kidney stones that are less than 20mm in size and in upper ureter or kidneys. You might also need to have more than one visit to the doctor as the complete removal of stone with this process takes few sessions.

The other one is called PCNL or percutaneous nephrolithotomy. In this procedure, a small tube is passed from the flank region to the kidney of the patient and the stone is converted to poedered form by the laser energy passed through this tube. This tube is fitted with a camera, which allows the doctor to make precise and accurate actions. It is a minimally invasive procedure and does not leave any lasting scars or marks on the body. It is used mostly for stones which are bigger in size that 2mm and cannot be removed through ESWL.

Other options are RIRS,URS and cystoscopy in which ureteroscope (a thin hollow tube with a camera ) is passed through the natural urinary passage to the stone and lasers are made to contact and pulverize the stone .No cut is needed during these procedures as natural urinary tract is used for the approach.

·         Price
Another feature to look out for when choosing a center for removing your kidney stone is the price. Depending on the services and the quality of the place, different hospitals charge differently for the same process. When choosing a place to get your kidney stone removed, then you have to make sure that you get the best quality and care at the best of prices. Best Kidney Stone Treatment in Delhi

With increasing technology and numerous discoveries taking place every day in the field of science has led to the establishment of a fact- about 98-99% of kidney stone can be removed without open surgery.

Yes! It is true. A patient of kidney stone can escape all the pain which comes with open surgery and can have treatment of kidney stone in much lesser time.

Urolife helps you treat your kidney stone problems through following treatments:

·         Shockwavelithotripsy
This treatment is best for stones which have a size of about 2 cm in diameter. Under this, the patient is admitted just before few hours of the surgery. He/she is given some sedative before the surgery. A bag filled with water is placed on the abdomen of the patient. This is done to ensure that shock wave targets the stone precisely.

Then about 1000-2000 shock waves are given to patient which crushes the stones into smaller parts. These parts come out usually via urine. This way one can get rid of the kidney stone easily.

·         Keyhole surgery
This method generally opts if the size of the stone is relatively bigger in size. Under this, the patient is treated with anesthesia before the operation. At first, a small flexible telescope and a small tube are passed via bladder to the kidney. This is a tricky part and an experienced doctor is needed for this. It helps the doctor to have a proper view of the stone and its position. The patient is placed on the operation table facing down.

Then the doctor makes a small incision in his/her back. In case the stone is big in size then it is broken in the piece using special rays or shock waves, and then collected with the help of the tube passed.  An X-ray is taken at end of the procedure in order to ensure that all the bits and pieces have been removed.

Both the process requires the patient to rest for 2-3 days only. There are no major precautions to be followed before and after the treatment as well.

A Deeper Insight On Lithotripsy

Shock wave Lithotripsy is probably the most common treatment meant for kidney stones. The waves (Shock waves) are targeted at a kidney stone from outside the body causing the stone to fragment. Due to this, these stones are broken into tiny fragments. This, at times, is also called Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).

As to what each of these words means:
  • Extracorporeal: Something from outside of the body
  • Shock Waves: Pressure waves
  • Lithotripsy: Stones getting crushed

How this procedure is conducted?
You are made to wear a medical gown and lie on an exam table on top of a soft, water filled cushion. Post this you will be given a mild sedative or a pain medicine before the entire procedure starts. This will also be accompanied by you being given antibiotics before the entire procedure begins so as to prevent infection.

High energy shock waves, also called sound waves, will pass through your body until they have converted the kidney stones into a lot of small particles. This is when you might begin to feel a tapping sensation

The entire procedure takes about 45 minutes up to one hour.
A tube might be placed on your back and into your kidney. This will go on to drain all of the urine from your kidney until all of the small fragments of the stone pass out of your body. The tube can be put in place before or after your treatment.

In recent times, Lithotripsy Treatment in Delhi has made massive strides and the procedure is now much cheaper, and also efficient.

The check ultrasound or sometimes xray will guarantee at the end of the procedure whether or not the entire stone has been cleared from your body.
There are, in totality, three types of Lithotripsy procedures
  1. Ultrasonic: In this procedure a probe breaks up a stone into a lot of other smaller pieces
  2. Extracorporeal Shock Wave: Stone is focused on C arm Imaging equipment and High-Frequency sound waves and then proceeds to break up the stone into smaller fragments. ESWL in Delhi has also made massive strides.
Advantages and disadvantages of this treatment
The main advatange of this treatment is being treated for kidney stones without having to undergone a surgery. As a result of this, various operation cost, recovery time, complications are eliminated. However, all types of kidney stones cannot be treated this way. Moreover, they are chances of small stones fragements being left in the body which can cause further implications.
