A kidney stone disorder is not uncommon. 1 in every 20 adults have kidney stones. A Kidney stone is a solid piece of material formed in the kidney, passes through the urinary tract and leaves the body in the urine.  Normally, when the size of the stone is very small, i.e. less than 5 mm, it passes off through the urine without any problems. However, if the size gets bigger than 5 mm, it can block the passage of the Ureter and the complications can arise.

The kidney stone is also known as the Renal Calculus and in medical terms called Urolithiasis. Kidney stones are normally formed when the concentration of minerals in the urine become high in concentration.

Causes of a Kidney stone disorder
There are many reasons for developing a Kidney Stone. Many times, it could be genetic and environmental causes. Dehydration is an important risk factor for Kidney stone.  Obesity also is a factor for developing kidney stone. Few medications, supplements and medical conditions like Hyperparathyroidism and gout can also become high risk factors for Kidney stones.

Major symptoms of a Kidney Stone
  1. Severe, excruciating pain:This pain is also called Renal colic and is known to be the worst pain sensations known. The pain radiates from the plank to the groin or the inner thigh and is usually intermittent lasting between 20 seconds to a minute.
  2. Passing of blood in urine: There are many reasons of blood in urine. However, if there is pain accompanied with blood, it could be a kidney stone. The blood occurs because of the stone rubbing the inside walls of the urethra. 
  3. Difficulty in passing urine: The stones could obstruct the urinary passage. The obstruction of urine could lead to Kidney infection and if untreated, in some cases, Kidney damage.

Other symptoms accompanying this pain could be
  • Cloudy and smelly urine
  • An urgency to pass urine
  • Restlessness
  • Chills and fever
  • Sweating
  • Nausea, vomiting
