Everything You Need to Know About Laser Kidney Stone Ureteroscopic Treatment

Laser kidney stone treatment is an invincible and effective way of getting rid of stones from various parts of your body like kidney, bladder, ureter and urethra. In this process, a thin lighted telescope is inserted into the kidney of the patient without any incision. The diameter of this instrument or tool is 2.5mm and it is very flexible. This allows the experts to visualize the entire kidney and the ureter from the inside.

The instrument contains a small segment port which lets the introduction of a holmium laser fiber, which is of 0.2 mm diameter, to break the kidney stone into various smaller pieces. This instrument also has a micro basket attached to it to retrieve stone fragments from the kidney efficiently.

Kidney stones having the size of 2cm size can be treated by using this technique. During the process of laser kidney stone treatment, an urologist inserts a scope into the urinary tract to find out the location of the stone. That tool or the scope may be a cystoscope, ureteroscope, renoscope or a nephroscope.

An optical fiber is introduced in the body through the working channel of the instrument and then the laser light is reflected directly on the stone. Through laser light, the stone is broken into small pieces and the left over pieces are washed out through the urinary tract. This procedure is carried out under the local or general anesthesia and this procedure is known as a minimal invasive method. This process can be performed in almost all the hospitals of the world.

The major advantage of this laser treatment is that it can be performed without the use of any incision but by simply inserting the instrument through the urethra. This treatment is very successful for the treatment of surgery and it is very easy to perform.

This treatment procedure of laser stone removal is carried out under general anesthesia, so the patients are required not to eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to the treatment. They are only allowed to take their usual medication with a minimum amount of water with exception of elements like warfarin, aspirin, etc. Along with these, non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are also restricted. Other directions will be given by your doctor along with asking for mid steam urine test to make sure that your urine is sterile before you undergo this laser treatment process.
